One of the biggest challenges for all home educators is figuring out how to get it all done in a day, and maintain your sanity while doing it. Here are some tips that I have learned along the way:
- Find a Support Network
You cannot do it alone. Look to your local libraries, Girl and Boy Scout troops, and even Facebook to find other parents that are home educators as well.
- Create a Schedule
Use a calendar or the options on your smartphone to help you stay on track. Having a plan for the day/week/month will help you stay on track. Make sure to allow time for opportunities for extra activities that might spring up along the way.
- Assign Chores to Your Children
One of the benefits of homeschooling is you can teach your children life skills that would not necessarily be taught in a traditional classroom setting. Don’t feel guilty about using child labor to keep your house clean. Chances are, they are the ones that have created most of the need for those chores to be done. Even the youngest child can do simple tasks.
- Set a Good Example
Your children will be more likely to be interested in reading if they see you take time out of your day to read as well. Do your best to maintain your interests such as hobbies or enrichment classes. They will be looking to you as their role model. Show them that these things are important.
- Involve Your Partner
Regardless of work schedules or any other outside obligations, it is important that both parents in the household are taking accountability for everything that needs to be done. If you are exclusively a stay-at-home parent, it is important to realize that you have a job as well.
